Job Opening: Senior Writer for American Civil Liberties Union (New York)

(Note: the position works in collaboration with the Director of Foundation Relations & Donor Communications and ACLU program staff to assess funding needs in order to create and implement foundation fundraising strategies on an array of issues including LGBT rights.)

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), founded in 1920 is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with more than 500,000 members dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The Development Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York City is seeking a full-time Senior Writer.

OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Foundation Relations and Donor Communications, the Senior Writer provides writing and editorial support for diverse written material, including proposals, reports, cultivation materials, and articles on an array of civil liberties issues for foundation and individual donor audiences.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work in collaboration with the Director of Foundation Relations & Donor Communications and ACLU program staff to assess funding needs in order to create and implement foundation fundraising strategies on an array of issues, such as LGBT rights, prisoners’ rights, and criminal justice reform.
• Serve as liaison with solicitors of individual donors within Development Department’s Leadership Gifts unit to create and review content for their proposal, stewardship, and marketing needs across all of the ACLU’s substantive program areas.
• Synthesize complex information into clear and concise grant proposals and reports, letters of inquiry, and stewardship materials for both foundations and individuals; draft newsletter articles and other development publications as needed.
• Adapt writing style to meet the interests of ACLU supporters and to reflect the relationship of funders to organization.
• Manage multiple written projects and meet all writing deadlines for assigned portfolio.
• Manage the stewardship of current donors in portfolio and the cultivation of prospects.
• Conduct foundation and corporate research to identify new potential funders and develop and implement appropriate communications to cultivate the funders’ interest.
• Collaborate with the Associate Director of Foundation Relations to develop grant budgets and budget reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Minimum of five years of professional writing or related experience, some of which is preferably in a development setting.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to easily adapt the tone and tenor of documents to reflect the various authors and audiences.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills, including ability to work with staff members at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to quickly produce clear, persuasive, well-organized and fact-checked materials, as needed.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
• Ability to quickly edit or rewrite the work of others.
• Ability to synthesize complex information from a variety of sources, including attorneys, affiliate personnel, policy makers, lobbyists and public-relations professionals, and other ACLU colleagues and turn it into clear, dynamic copy that is understandable and appealing to a specific donor audience.
• Familiarity and experience working with donor databases preferred.
• Must strongly support priority issues of the ACLU and be familiar with social justice, civil rights or civil liberties issues.

Temporary Writer (With Experience in LGBT Justice Issues) Wanted for The Human Rights Campaign (Washington, DC)

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) seeks an experienced writer to work on a temporary basis within the Communications Department to write and edit a variety of reports, factsheets, speeches, opinion pieces, web content, news releases and other materials.

The successful candidate should have a keen sense of writing for various audiences in different media – anything from an issue brief for administration officials to an article for HRC’s membership magazine to a major speech. She or he must be able to conduct research independently and with colleagues, synthesize a variety of sources, and produce cogent and creative arguments. Additionally, the writer must be able to develop messages and taking points based on quantitative and qualitative message research. She or he should have experience in writing in the voice of a principal in order to produce speeches and materials that are authentic to the presenter. The ideal candidate will have experience with LGBT and other social justice issues.

The senior writer will report to the vice president for communications and will work with senior members of the organization and its volunteers on specific assignments.

Candidates should be prepared to present a portfolio of their written work. At a minimum, the ideal candidate should possess exceptional writing talent as well as the communications skills necessary to elicit the right information from a variety of sources. Additionally, the writer must be comfortable working in a high-volume environment with quick project turnaround.

All positions at the Human Rights Campaign and/or the Human Rights Campaign Foundation may require travel on a regular basis or periodically. Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply.

Gay Writers Wanted for Moot Magazine's June 2012 Gay Issue (rate: $25-$300 per article)

Moot Magazine is a national monthly magazine written to celebrate the misfits, outcasts, and iconoclasts of our day, from celebrities to everyday people. it's political and irreverent. nothing is off limits. Written by liberal minded writers, for Generation X and GenY individuals to espouse beliefs for a new more tolerant means of life and exercise free speech in a progressively censoring country. We feature offbeat articles, celebrity interviews, blogs, man on the street interviews, and much more.

We publish monthly as well as online weekly columns. We are seeking gay writers to help round out of staff of existing writers. Our June issue will be our GAY issue and we want many of the articles to be from a gay perspective.

However, we are always seeking freelance contributors to write about Civil Rights, Politics, Business + Technology, Gay rights, Women's Rights, Religion, News, and the Arts, (fashion, design, architecture, theater, film, dance, and music) as well as special bloggers to be featured on our site, gay or straight or in-between.

OVERVIEW

In The Life Media (ITLM) produces change through innovative media that exposes social injustice by chronicling lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) life and providing our audience with effective ways to advance equality within and beyond our communities. ITLM was founded in 1992 on the simple premise of using media to advance social and political justice for LGBT people. Since then, ITLM has been the media leader for the LGBT movement, and over the last decade, ITLM has advanced beyond a television-only platform to air across media platforms with greater flexibility and explicitly link media to activism on the Internet. ITLM promotes education on critical LGBT issues by producing investigative content, distributing it to the broadest possible audiences (utilizing broadcast, online and mobile tools), partnering with advocacy groups and providing tools for viewers to learn more and take action.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Coordinator assists the Marketing and Communications Manager to achieve departmental goals, working within a busy environment with often multiple and shifting priorities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to coordinating all communications and marketing functions of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Marketing
  • Monitor all public materials for adherence to brand attributes (e.g. logo, approved fonts and color palette)
  • Draft episode descriptions and design promotional materials for use across multi-media platforms
  • Produce and upload content onto website using CMS
  • Prepare and distribute multi-media email communications using CMS and basic html coding
  • Coordinate marketing campaigns of web exclusive content by strategically targeting markets, managing advertising campaigns and coordinating roll-out with the Production Department

  • Support Marketing and Communications Manager in coordinating art design of monthly DVD cover

Social Media and Digital Initiatives

  • 2-3 cumulative years of experience in communications, marketing or promotion, and/or outreach

Stage for Change Theatre Co. Looking for LGBTQI Interviewees (SF)

Local theatre production company, Stage for Change, is putting together a show to raise social awareness and acceptance around sexual orientation and gender identification. We are interviewing individuals who are willing to tell their stories and real life experiences, both comedic and tragic. If you are an LGBTQ/Alphabet person that has experienced any kind of discrimination, abuse or hate crime as a result of your sexual orientation or gender identity, or if you know of anyone that has a story to tell along these lines, please contact us. Additionally, if you have experiences, stories or anecdotes that revel in the irony or hilarity of life, we want to talk to you! If you are a straight and/or gender conforming person and you have witnessed a loved one be abused or rejected as a result of their sexual orientation or gender identity, please shoot us an email.

DETAILS:

We will be using your stories and material to create an original, fictional play/work to be shown at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, with the possibility of a national tour. Your name and personal details/information will remain anonymous as the material will be played out by actors/actresses

Our mission is to end prejudice and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, educate parents to accept their children, build communities to be more welcoming and tolerant, allow kids in school to be more confident. We are currently seeking an editor who is familiar with the Downtown and Uptown areas, and who possesses excellent writing and editing skills.

THIS POSITION REQUIRES:
  • a college journalism degree or significant equivalent experience
  • at least two years of experience managing a newspaper or periodical experience managing freelance writers and reporters
  • the ability to mine meetings, websites and neighborhoods for news
  • the ability to write compelling news stories, fun features and eye-catching headlines in AP style
  • is organized, professional and a team player, and has good people skills
  • is an energetic idea person who doesn't mind working an occasional evening and attending occasional community events.

OTHER PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • familiarity with WordPress and website operation

Volunteers Needed: Help Plan the OutWrite LGBT Book Fair

The 2012 OutWrite LGBT Book Festival will take place August 3rd and 4th, 2012. Our first OutWrite Festival took place last year and included: 9 book-readings with authors, two poetry events, and three discussions on queer literature and queer literary culture.

We need your help to make this year's event a success!
