Xcite Books has teamed up with the UK’s leading lesbian magazine Diva to find h0t new lesbian writing talent.

Using the Delicious Divas theme we are looking for lesbian-themed short stories of between 3000 – 5000 words. This theme can be very widely interpreted but must be a short story rather than the description of an experience.

As with all Xcite books, all s3xual activity must be consensual and legal.

Five winning stories will be published in an ebook anthology produced by Xcite Books called Delicious Divas, which will be published on August 1st.

Submissions should be sent as a word document attachment to xcitecomp@xcitebooks.co.uk by June 1st.

The judging panel includes Xcite editor Elizabeth Coldwell and Diva editor Jane Czyzselska. The judge’s decision is final.

The winners will be announced on June 30th and the ebook released on August 1st. The winners will also receive copies of Xcite’s lesbian short story collections Wanton Women and Girl Fun 1.

Entries can be accepted under pseudonyms.

The winners will be announced and notified on June 30th 2012 and the ebook released on August 1st 2012.

Copyright for the winning entries will be retained by Xcite Books for five years. Winning authors will be paid royalties each month of 50% of net receipts.

A creative writing workshop that aims to engage everyone in exploring our inner and outer worlds through poems and personal accounts.

We will employ our creativity to express our views and aspects of our lives past and present. Using accessible writing techniques, we can engage questions such as: Who am I now? When have I felt lost or fearful or angry? What do I perceive in the world around me? Through our writing, we can find ways of shaping our ideas, thoughts, emotions, memories – reclaiming the power and strength of our own unique voice.

The workshop runs for three hours, 6.30-9.30 and there will be an opportunity for tea and biscuits. The workshop is open to women who identify as cis or trans and queer feminists. We ask for a donation of 2-3 pounds to cover the cost of the room hire.

Call for Submissions - Shelf Lives: Queer Writers on Queer Bookshops (Treehouse Press)

An anthology celebrating queer bookshops, past and present. We’re looking for stories and non-fiction pieces about what goes on (or went on) in queer bookshops. We prefer personal accounts of a specific moment in time, rather than a general history of a bookshop. Stories about the first time you went into a queer bookshop, or about setting one up. A memorable reading you attended or gave at a queer bookshop. Another writer you met there. A love affair. A rivalry. Maybe (like us) you worked in a bookshop.

Tell us the story of that memorable client, or the first time you saw your own book in the window. What other events and activities went on in the bookshop: discussion groups, consciousness-raising meetings, a backroom, writing workshops. Through individual stories, we want to keep the wonderful world of queer bookshops alive. We’re looking for stories from around the world. It doesn’t matter if the bookshop lasted only a few months, or whether it’s still in business thirty years on. We want the anthology to be as diverse and global as possible. Reprints are fine, as are extracts from previously published novels and books of non-fiction.

Since Homotopia launched in 2004 we have supported, co-produced & commissioned a wide range of local, regional, national & international based companies, artists, events and performances including Gary Clarke Company, Holly Woodlawn, Fellow Travellers Group Show, Joseph Mercier, Outsiders – Liverpool’s first Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, Armistead Maupin, The Lavender Club, Hello Sailor: Merseyside Maritime Museum, Queer Storytelling Festival, David Hoyle, Nigel Charnock, Our Story Liverpool which was the first ever research project into the hidden history of LGBT Liverpool, House Of Suarez ‘Liverpool Is Burning’, Gerry Potter ‘Miracle’, Homotopia seeks work in various art-forms such as live performances from theatremakers, musicians, dance artists, performance artists, writers, artists and comedians/cabaret/vaudeville acts.

We are committed to supporting local artists wherever we can and are endeavouring to create more platforms and opportunities for new and emerging artists and producers. The work must be full length performances of at least 1 hour duration. We will consider shorter pieces of work for cabaret and performance art. We also seek work from visual artists for a variety of exhibitions throughout the year.

Queercore Initiative

As part of the future development of the festival we are looking at building a strand of work which is committed to new work . Homotopia is keen to attach development and/or seed funding to projects, companies or artists that are looking to be produced as either a Homotopia production or co-commission with other producers and/or partners. In addition to this we will support artists with individual arts council grant applications and other funding bodies. Homotopia can offer modest fees or box office splits and may also be able to cover travel and accommodation.

Artists must cover their own production costs.

The final programme will be selected by Homotopia in consultation with partners and producers at host venues. Homotopia embraces a wide range of work and is keen to partner with existing companies/artists. Some of it is mainstream with a traditional appeal and some of it is innovative and experimental. Some work can focus on LGBT issues while other work can be related to LGBT themes.

All work submitted for consideration must either feature:

1. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) themes
2. Be of interest to an LGBT audience.
3. Be created or presented by LGBT artists.

It is helpful if you state on your submission which of these criteria your work meets.

GFEST – Gaywise FESTival has announced the call for entries – open to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGB & T) and queer artists on its website: http://www.gaywisefestival.org.uk

The festival accepts submissions in 3 main categories : Short Films, Visual Arts and Performances.

The festival was supported by the Prime Minister David Cameron, Mayor of London and past & present cultural ministers last year. This will be fifth year for GFEST and Arts Council England has also supported the ever evolving festival programme over the past 4 years.

GFEST was forced to face a controversy last year when its visual arts exhibition was deemed partly unsuitable for some children’s groups by the exhibition venue in Camden last year.

NIRANJAN KAMATKAR, GFEST director said, “This year our planning is better and we will work with venues who are committed to promote profile of LGBT, queer arts. The festival offers excellent platform for LGBT films and artworks. GFEST 2011 presents an ideal opportunity for sponsors to show their commitment to LGBT equality in all walks of life.”

Call for Submissions with GLBT and British Elements: Tea and Crumpets Anthology

Tea and Crumpets: call for submissions

We are looking for a range of short stories between 1,000 and 5000 words long that showcase both the writing talent of authors attending the Meet, and that are thematically connected to the British Isles. Stories should be either set in Britain, feature British characters or have a strong connection to Britain in some way. Consider what it means to be queer in Britain today. Think of iconic British sights and our national character. Revel in our idiosyncrasies and eccentricities. Take your inspiration from our rich and expressive language or amuse us with earthy British slang. Consider the whole of our fascinating nation, from the Scottish highlands down to the Isles of Scilly. Raise your rainbow umbrellas high and celebrate!

Stories from a wide range of genres will be welcomed (including historical), provided they have both a GLBT and British element. M/M, F/F, Bi and transgender stories are all equally welcome. Er0tic content is fine, but please steer clear of anything too contentious. Because of the potential copyright issues, we cannot accept fanfiction either.

If you possess the copyright for your story and it isn’t currently under exclusive contract to anyone else, we are happy to consider stories which have been published before, if that’s made plain in the covering e-mail.

This anthology call is only open to attendees of the 2011 UK GLBT Fiction Meet, but we would like to make this as high a quality anthology as possible so attendance is not an automatic guarantee of having your story accepted. However, if you are willing to work with an editor we hope that we will be able to include something from all the authors who submit stories. I will be working with several other volunteer authors in the selection and initial editing stages.

Contracts will ask for non-exclusive rights to publish in digital and print form for a term of five years from the date of initial publication. This is for a promotional anthology, so you will not get paid. Any profits will go into funding next year’s UK GLBT Fiction Meet so we can make it bigger and better than ever! You will receive a free digital copy to use as a promotional give-away (and hopefully a print copy if we can afford it).

Please follow standard formatting guidelines to make life easier as we put the anthology together: 12pt Times New Roman, 1.5 spaced with no spaces between paragraphs. Indent your paragraphs using the ruler rather than the tab key. Include a cover page with your full legal name, pen name, email, snail mail, phone number and 50 word bio. Attach to your submission email as a Word doc. You may submit up to two stories for consideration, although we will likely only choose one from each author. Stories that go over the maximum word count may be submitted, but they will need to be exceptional to be considered.

Deadline for submissions: 11th April 2011. Decisions will be announced on 2nd May 2011.

Call for Submissions: "First Time" Anthology of LGBT Short Stories (Sotto Voce Press)

Sotto Voce Press is excited to announce that submissions are now open for a new anthology of British Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered writing.

Working title First Time is an anthology of short stories, to be published by Sotto Voce Press in 2012.

Rob Hardy, Editorial Director, says of the project:

“This anthology, which is based around the theme of 'the first time' is intended to be a recognition that we all share something in common, whether it is influence, experience, or the expectations of others.

There are many possible 'first times' for gay people. You don’t have to write a funny story about coming out, about falling in love for the first time, about having your heart broken. Because these are not the only stories that we have to tell.

But it is OK if this is what you want to write about, because these might be aspects of our realities, as long as you do it from the inside, with compassion, understanding and freshness, showing other perspectives, since the stories that we see again and again reflect only one angle. We’re looking for well-crafted stories with wisdom, depth, complexity, energy and detail. You write about what you care about, the story you want to tell.”

Stories are for an adult readership, between roughly 3000 and 5000 words. Apart from correspondence concerning the finally selected stories, there will be no individual feedback to authors on stories submitted, although all submissions will be read.

Strong lesbian writing with an emphasis on popular commercial fiction in the following genres: contemporary, romantic, er0tic, historical, paranormal, crime, thriller and suspense. Guidelines for Polari First Book Prize

Polari, London’s popular monthly queer cultural cafe event, has launched a book prize for new authors and is seeking submissions for its first award in 2011.

The judges will announce a long list at the 2011 London Literature Festival at the Southbank Centre in July and a short list published at the end of September 2011. The winner will be announced in November at Polari’s 4th birthday.

Judges for The Polari First Book Prize compeition are Paul Burston, author and host of Polari, Rachel Holmes of the Southbank Centre, Joe Storey Scott of Prowler, Suzi Feay, Associate Editor at the Financial Times and Fiona McMorrough of Fiona McMorrough Associates.

The deadline for submissions is 1 Feb 2011, and books must have been published in the 12 month period preceding that date. Submissions must be made by the UK publisher, or if self-published sent with a one page letter stating how and why the book was published that way.

The Polari First Book Prize is seeking submissions for its third contest. The award is open to any first book which “explores the queer experience” and has been published in the UK within twelve months of the February 1st 2011 closing date.

The prize is for a first book which explores the queer experience and is open to any work published in the UK in English within the twelve months leading up to the submission date (poetry or prose, fiction or non-fiction.

Write Queer London Writing Competition (fact, fiction or poetry) Now Open to Submissions

Deadline: 18 January 2011

The third Write Queer London competition is now open for submissions of fact, fiction or poetry about the history of gay lives in London.

If you need inspiration Untold London have organised some free writing workshops, including an event based on the Yokel's Preceptor - a guide to cruising Victorian gay London at the British Library - and a crash course in the whole-of-gay-history-in-about-an-hour at the British Museum with Egyptology curator Richard Parkinson. There's even a chance to have a creative rifle round the London Metropolitan Archives and to explore the Museum of London with like minded writers.

You can also join the Facebook group to see who else is taking part.

The competition deadline is 18 January 2011 so plenty of time to work on your words. Winners will be announced at a party on Valentine's Day at the Museum of London.

Prizes: Win up to £300, get your work published in Chroma Journal as well as reading a bit of it before the great and good at our prizegiving party.
