Creative Writing Workshops at the National Queer Arts Festival (California)

Date: 5 June 2011

During the Winter and Spring of 2011, we’ve paired some of the finest emerging Bay Area poets with luminaries who span four decades of literary legacy to bring you Out of Necessity. Testing how artistic relationships support and sustain poets as they write as a means of political re-imagination and reclamation, Out of Necessity features award-winning and emerging poets:
  • REGIE CABICO
  • CHERYL CLARKE
  • ACHY OBEJAS
  • VANESSA HUANG
  • SUZANNE DEL MAZO
  • NAJVA SOL
Join us for a multi-media performance of these six writers’ work, including video clips of queer poets from across the country talking about who’s influenced their writing, and a discussion moderated by CAMILLE T. DUNGY with the featured established writers about how mentorship influences their writing and commitment to producing work that speaks to communal stories and histories.

Sign up to take a writing workshop with Regie Cabico and Achy Obejas on June 4th and 5th!

June 4, 12-3pm: "Conflict in Fiction" with Achy Obejas (sign up here)

Workshop Description: “In this workshop, we’ll examine and work with ways to develop conflict in literary stories. We’ll discuss choices and stakes, the importance of tension, and ways to resolve stories without having characters kill themselves, live happily ever after, betray the rest of the story, or do anything too terribly obvious.”

June 5, 12-3pm: "Verbal Fire" with Regie Cabico (sign up here)

Workshop Description: “This workshop will focus on generating poetry slam texts and finding your own unique delivery and style. Attention will be placed to the visual elements of the "word" with the vocal and physical aspects of delivery. We will look at performance as making choices and creating gestural images by "diving" into the emotional life of the poem. Open for all levels.”

Out of Necessity is co-curated & co-produced by COLE KRAWITZ & ARISE WHITE.

Please make preparations to ensure these events are accessible and safe for people with chemical injury and environmental illness. We request you refrain from wearing hair and body products with fragrance or clothing washed in detergent with fragrance.

Crossed Genres Publications Seeks Novels with Queer Characters

Crossed Genres Publications is currently OPEN for submissions of completed novels to publish in print and ebook formats.

What to include in your submission:

* Your personal contact information, including applicable credits (in the email’s body)
* A cover letter containing a detailed yet concise synopsis of your novel
* The first ten (10) pages of your novel. DO NOT send the entire novel!

To submit your novel, please use the submissions form. Write the title of your novel and your name in the Subject line. Submission attachments must be .doc, .docx or .rtf. NOTE: Crossed Genres Publications does NOT accept Multiple or Simultaneous submissions for novels.

Manuscript format

* 12 pt. Times New Roman or Arial (Courier is evil)
* Single-spaced, line between paragraphs
* Italics for italics, Bold for bold, etc.

Beyond the above we’re not picky, but please don’t get too “creative”: no blue paper/fonts, 18-pt Copperplate Gothic chapter titles, or 2-inch margins. (Yes, we have seen these.)

What are we looking for?

Manuscripts between 50,000 and 100,000 words (Firm). The story must be Science Fiction and/or Fantasy; blending of other genres is fine, but not required.

We tend to favor character-driven stories, but that doesn’t mean we won’t appreciate a strong action piece. Make your characters fascinating and your plot engaging. Read some of our previous publications to get an idea of what we like. Things we want to see MORE of:

* Queer characters
* Characters of Color
* Women MCs
* Disabled characters
* Science saves the day!
* Far future
* Stories set outside North America

Beyond that, there is no hard-and-fast rule; any story that follows the above guidelines will be considered.

What are we NOT looking for?

While Crossed Genres will consider any submissions, we’re unlikely to be interested in concepts which seek to build on currently popular themes. If you’ve described your novel as “[Bestselling Novel #1] meets [Bestselling Novel #2]“, it’s probably not what we’re looking for. The below will be very hard sells:

* Vampires, zombies or werewolves
* “Science-as-villain”
* Weak women being rescued by macho guys
* Arthurian retellings
* Eurocentric faeries
* Time travel
* Ghost stories

Though it should go without saying, any submissions promoting discrimination, bigotry, and/or hatred will be deleted without notice or consideration.

Compensation:

Crossed Genres will pay an advance of $250 for accepted novels, paid on publication. After the novel has earned out the advance, the author will receive royalties based on sales.

Rights:

Crossed Genres takes first worldwide print and ebook rights for two (2) years.

Crossed Genres magazine

Payment: $10 ($25 for cover art), free E-Book, discounts

Short Stories

* 1,000-8,000 words (FIRM)
* Science Fiction and/or Fantasy and/or Horror combined with the current genre
* We no longer accept simultaneous submissions.

(We do not accept stories above 8,000 words.)

Open to M/M Fantasy Romance: Carina Press Editor Alissa Davis

Carina Press, Harlequin’s digital-first imprint, is open to submissions.

Alissa Davis:

* I’m still seeking foodie romance. (Sherry Thomas’s Delicious is an excellent example of romance centered around food. It’s a historical, but I have no time period preferences.)
* It’d be great to get more fantasy romance, and I’d love to see some m/m fantasy romance.
* I also want more BD/SM, er0tica and er0tic romance.
* I recently edited a steampunk erotic fantasy romance called Journeyman’s Ride by Marie Harte and fell in love with the juxtaposition of Norse mythology and steampunk technology. If you have a book with a whole bunch of sub-genres successfully integrated into one story, please send it my way.

HOW TO SUBMIT

3. 2-5 page synopsis of book that details character development, plot, and conflict/story resolution. Attach as an RTF file with file name TITLE_SYNOPSIS where you substitute your book’s title in place of TITLE.

Open to Gay/ Queer Submissions: Clan Destine Press (Australia)

Deadline: 13 May 2011, 13 November 2011

Clan Destine Press will open its portals to unsolicited, agent-less manuscripts by Australian authors twice a year.

First Portal: April Fool’s Day to May 13

Second Portal: Octobris Primus to November 13

The CDP submission portals will be open for six weeks each time and only for genre fiction.

Our Quest

Clan Destine Press is seeking crime, mystery, speculative fiction, fantasy, science fiction, horror, urban fantasy, historical, thrillers, adventure, paranormal, steampunk, and ah-ha! – which is any combination of the aforementioned – for Adults and Young Adults.

Manuscripts should be at least 60,000 words.

We want inventive, clever and original works of page-turning genre fiction; riveting cross-genre stories; books that are heroic, questy, feral, dark, funny, spine-tingly, fast-paced, serious, silly and sensible.

We’re after novels that are straight, gay, queer, ancient, contemporary, gothic, retro, post-apocalyptic, earthbound and/or galactic.

We specialise in genre fiction but – for some strange reason – we also like fictional (& factional) cats, dogs, alpacas, cosmic toucans and saw-toothed bunnies.

Apart from this predilection for strange and furry creatures – both real and un – we crave exciting, plot-driven, boundary-pushing fiction with fully-fledged characters and a strong sense of place.

Our Mission

It is the prime objective of Clan Destine Press to uncover, foster and promote brand new Australian genre writers.

We also want to encourage already-published authors to cross-over and dabble in new worlds. So, if your other publisher wants to wedge you in the genre-box where you sell best for them, but you want to try something new, something daring, something right outside your pyramid… then visit our alternate universe. We don’t mind at all that someone else got you first, because we’re the publisher who leap into the unknown with you.

How to Submit Your Fabulous Novel Round 1 – email

Your email should introduce you, the title of your book, its word count and genre. It should also feature a blurb – you know the few paragraphs on the back of a novel that tell you ‘enough’ of what it’s about, so that you’re tempted to open the cover and read the first line. The blurb that ‘sells’ your book should be no more than 200 words.

Attached to your email should be three documents – all in MS Word (.doc not .docx)

1. A one-page cover letter that includes your name, contact information (email, phone, snail-mail address); the title and genre of your novel; and a brief bio. Your bio should include any previous publications (short stories or novels) in any paying market, and the publisher; plus any credentials, life skills or qualifications that may be relevant to your novel.

2. A three to five-page synopsis of the entire book. This should include all important plot elements, including the end of the story, an insight into (main)-character development.

3. The first three chapters (but no more than 10,000 words) of your book; prepared in standard manuscript format.

(See the CDP Guide to Stuff below.)

Standard manuscript format = margins of 2.5cm (25 mm) all the way around; indented paragraphs, without line breaks between; double-spaced text; 12 point Times New Roman.

Do not justify the text.

Make sure the header – on every page – of your manuscript includes either your name or the title of the book (top left) and the page number (top right).

Round 2 - our job

The Clan Destine Press editorial department will do its best to read your submission and get back to you – either way – within three weeks.

If we are interested, intrigued, can’t wait to get our hands on the whole thing, we will ask to see your complete novel.

Round 3 – hard copy

If we request your novel, you will then send a hard copy of your complete book by snail mail. Yes, we will give you the secret co-ordinates to enable you to do this.

Your printed manuscript must be prepared in standard manuscript format – on white paper, printed on one side of the page only. Do not bind the manuscript in any way.

Include with your manuscript a copy of your original one-page cover letter including your contact details (and email address in an easy to find format).

We will confirm receipt of your book by email.

Round 4 – we read, you wait

Seriously that’s what happens. We will endeavour to read your novel and get back to you – again, one way or the other – within eight weeks.

If we require more time we will let you know.

Mostly, needing more time will have next to nothing to do with your book.

Sometimes we require more time because – having opened the submission portal for a brief six weeks – yours might not be the only manuscript we’re considering.

Sometimes we require more time because we will also be working on books already in-production.

Round 5 - two possibilities

1) WOW! We love your novel and offer you a contract. Fabulous news; much woo-hooing; champagne/ coffee – whatever; enough said, really.

We keep your hard copy as a treasured artefact and ask you to email the Word version.

Then there’s lots more work for you, and us, as your fabulous novel goes through its very own editorial process as we turn it into the real book that you always knew it was.

2) Hmm… We don’t like it as much as we thought we would; or it turns out not to be a good fit for Clan Destine Press. We say sorry it was good, but…

Because we’re not a generic manuscript assessment service, we MAY give you limited feedback; and might suggest where-to next for you. This latter may include: (sadly) the drawing board; (constructively) a good mentor or editor; or (encouragingly) a different publisher.

We will shred, burn, cast into a blackhole the hard copy of your manuscript because: a) we can’t afford to post it back to you; and b) so that no-one – human or alien – can steal your wonderful words.

Some CDP Definitions

Young Adult = fiction for humans aged from 15 years old and up.

Given the bold, inventive and in-no-way-patronising calibre of so much contemporary YA fiction, then it would be cool if your novel also happened to entertain 20, 35, 50 or 70 year-olds.

Whether or not it’s aimed purely at teenagers (15+) WE know that young adults swear, fall in love, experiment with drugs, graffiti, sex, dragon-taming, vampire slaying and all manner of other really bad evils like football, shopping, texting-while-walking, and fast food.

Straight/Gay/Queer = fiction for, by or including humans who are straight, gay, queer, undecided, or yet to be identified.

Fiction that includes all manner of: friendships and relationships – platonic, soulmatey, s3xual, inseparable-but-not-s3xual, or evil-arch-rivaly; family units – including all possible modern-human or galactic variations on that concept; characters – gay, straight, as3xual, lesbian, heteros3xual, homos3xual, bis3xual, trans-gendered, multi-gendered, androgynous, unis3xual or venusian.

This definition applies equally to Adult and Young Adult fiction.

By the way, we love spies, private eyes, pirates, assassins, ninjas, psychos, crooks, cops, slayers; fast cars, rocket bikes, attack helicopters, starships, spaceshuttles; powerful magic, evil overlords, scurrilous underlings, swords, wands, sais, mythological beasties, devils, angels, ghosts and succubi; ghoul, vampires, werethings, witches, wizards, immortals and zombies; pharaohs, scribes, gladiators, queens, Amazons and other mighty warriors; archaeologists, adventurers, sidekicks, gods and demons; spaceships, guns, chainmail, warp drives, strange lands, familiar streets, time travel and watchcats.

Some Really Important Bits of Stuff

To prepare yourself for the opening of the Clan Destine Press submission portals, so you can truly impress us with your manuscript, there are a few things you must do, must avoid and must remember.

And all of these must be done before you submit your email proposal.

The Obvious
  • Avoid clichés – in your writing and your plot.
  • Sometimes a chair is just a chair.
  • Use Australian (not American) English.
  • Check your facts.
Complete your novel

Do not send a synopsis for an ‘idea’ you have; or a synopsis and three chapters of a book that is not yet finished. We’re not interested. Seriously, we’re not.

Don’t send the best bit

Do not send three chapters from the middle of your manuscript ‘because it’s the exciting part’.
If we’re not grabbed from the first line, paragraph or page then we won’t care that it really gets going 50 or so pages in.

Read your own book

Read your completed manuscript through – from start to finish. This means proof read the ‘finished version’ that you plan to send to us.

Give your novel to someone else to read through – before you send it to us.

Make sure that someone else is a reader – of many books – who might have a clue.

If you don’t already belong to a nurturing Writers’ Group whose prime purpose is regular constructive criticism and feedback – that you have heeded – then go find one, or form your own.

If it’s too late and you’ve written an entire novel under the bedcovers by torchlight without showing another living soul then, after you’ve read it again yourself, seek out another living soul.
Oh what? You’re shy? You’re about to send it to us, silly; that’s a way bigger deal than asking your best friend.

Um, speaking of friends, family and potentially-clueless strangers…

Ask someone who knows your genre to read your fabulous novel. Don’t give a crime novel to a sf fan who never reads crime; or a fantasy novel to your Aunt Ethel who only reads gay horror. Don’t give your treasure to your Mum and no one else – because Mums really can’t be trusted with their kids’ fabulous novels. And no, not even if she’s a school teacher. She may well pick up all your typos – which will be great for us! – but she will love your book just because you wrote it.

Make sure you ask Whoever to read the same version, from start to finish, that you intend to send to us. This way you will be able to correct all your typos and grammatical hiccups before you send it to us.

Standard Manuscript Format – in English
  • Margins 2.5 cm all around
  • This really does mean 2.5 cm / 25 mm / one inch margins – left and right; top and bottom.
  • Text 12pt Times New Roman
  • This applies to your entire manuscript. The font / typeface must be 12 pt TNR – not Arial, not Calabria, not Courier or any other fancy font.
  • If you have an ‘in-context’ reason to have parts of your novel in a different font – please use Arial 10pt.
  • Paragraphing Double-space your text.
  • Indented paragraphs means Use the Tab button on your keyboard for each new para – preferably set to 5mm. Please don’t hit the space bar five or six times!
  • No line spaces means no line breaks between paragraphs; or any ‘set space’ above or below your paras.
  • Do not justify your text means please set your alignment Left.
  • Do not use fancy MS Word boxes of any kind – ever.
Submissions should be sent to Lindy at lindycameron@own.net.au

If the book of your heart fits into a niche that has very little shelf space in a traditional bookstore, Carina Press is eager to read and potentially publish your story.

Our submissions guidelines are below. If you have any questions, please first see our Submissions FAQ – if your question was not answered you can email us at submissions@carinapress.com.

In other words, if your manuscript is 15,000 words or longer, we will consider it! We will not look at manuscripts under 15,000 words.

Important note We do not require non-romance genre fiction books to have romantic elements. We read, acquire and publish non-romance with no romantic elements as well!

Your passion, quality of writing and voice is what will make your manuscript stand out and be considered for publication.

We are seeking submissions in all subgenres and all levels of sensuality. We welcome everything from the very sweet to the incredibly s3xy, featuring couples (or multiples) from all walks of life and s3xual orientation, including same-s3x romances. Romances should focus on the development of the relationship, as well as external and internal conflict; the heat level should be appropriate to the book and enhance the story, and the primary relationship in the book should offer a happily ever after (HEA) or happily for now in an emotionally satisfying manner.

The key element to a successful romance is characterization, creating a unique, believable hero and heroine who need to end up together in order to achieve the happily ever after. Alpha heroes remain popular.

Subgenres of romance we are seeking include, but are not limited to, historical, romantic suspense, romantic comedy, futuristic, contemporary, western, Egyptian, Roman, paranormal, er0tic romance and fantasy.

Miniseries have proven to be very popular with readers and Carina Press is looking for interesting twists on established, popular romance themes (marriage of convenience, cowboys, vampires, babies). We are interested in seeing your fresh interpretation on novels featuring astrology, pets – especially rescue animals – playing a role within the story as matchmaker or catalyst, and other unusual or fresh themes. The only limit is your imagination!

Carina Press will also acquire books that have been previously released, but for which the author has either retained digital rights or had rights revert to them. To submit previously published material, please follow the below guidelines and submit it to Angela James at: submissions@carinapress.com. If your books are not available for submission digitally due to publication pre-digital age, please send a detailed query letter to Angela in lieu of manuscript/synopsis.
