Call for Submissions - Charming: Modern Gay Er0tic Fairy Tales (Circlet Press)

Once upon a time, in a land not very far away, Circlet Press was looking for er0tic, modern-day fairy tales for the gay community. What happens when a young intern falls prey to the Big Bad Wolves of the New York stock exchange, or when an archaeologist stumbles across a sleeping prince in the ruins of Angkor Wat? All stories in this volume should be gay-themed (male/male focused) but the authors may be of any gender or orientation.

MORE DETAILS ON SUBMITTING:

Length: Our preferred length is approximately 3500 to 7500 words, but we will consider the range from 2000 to 10,000 words.

How to Submit: All submissions must be made via email to Rian Darcy, editor, at the following address: rian_darcy@lavabit.com

Submissions sent to other addresses/other editors at Circlet Press will not be considered. Standard manuscript formatting rules apply even though sending as an attachment (MS Word .doc or .rtf preferred). Please note that this means your name, address, and email contact must appear on the manuscript itself and not simply in your email message. (If you’re not sure what standard short story submission format should look like, Google is your friend.)

No simultaneous submissions (that is, don’t also send your story elsewhere at the same time, and don’t send it to multiple Circlet editors, either), and no multiple submissions to the same book. One story per author per anthology, thanks.

All stories must have er0tic focus. Romantic content is welcome, but in a short story remember to keep the details on the action and its effects on the main character’s internal point of view. We favor a strong, singular narrative voice (no ‘head hopping’). For more details on our editorial preferences, see the general submission guidelines on circlet.com. We highly recommend reading the guidelines, especially the “do not send” list, to increase your chances of sending us something we’ll love. Try to avoid cliches. Fresh and direct language is preferred to overly euphemistic. We do not publish horror.

Originals only, no reprints. We purchase first rights for inclusion in the ebook anthology for $25, with the additional rights to a print edition later which would also be paid $25 if a print edition happens. Authors retain the rights to the individual stories; Circlet exercises rights to the anthology as a whole.

Call for Submissions - Blood Drenched Rainbows: An LGBT Charity Anthology (Alter Press)

Alter Press is proud to announce it's first annual charity anthology: Blood Drenched Rainbows

Details: his will be a charity anthology so as such there will be no payment for the stories. All sales from the book will go to the NOH8 campaign, a campaign promoting LGBT rights and freedoms.

Stories: I am looking for general horror stories that feature strong LGBT characters written by LGBT authors. Let me repeat that, I am only accepting stories from authors who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgendered. Stories should be somewhere between 5 - 8K words shooting for around 100,00K words total for the entire book. Any kind of horror story will be accepted. I would like to have as wide a range of stories as possible, so please be creative.

Deadline: Blood Drenched Rainbows will remain open until the book is filled.

Other: I am also looking for any LGBT artists, formatters and possible editors for the stories that would be willing to donate their time to the book.

Call for Submissions: Lethe Press's Reprint Anthology of Bi/ Genderqueer SF (rate: $100 per story)

I will be editing a reprint anthology of bisexual and genderqueer speculative fiction for Lethe Press, to be released in 2012!

SF is the perfect field for exploring the in-between spaces of emotion, performance and sexuality. The queer, the variable, the fluid and the strange are all present in speculative worlds, from classics like Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness to contemporary queer texts like Catherynne M. Valente's Palimpsest. Speculative fiction is about imagination and extrapolation - what better to extrapolate on than stretching or breaking the binaries of performance, attraction and sexual identity?

As for specifics: The anthology will feature a mix of stories from various speculative fields, including fantasy, science fiction, and horror. I am accepting only reprints, but I am interested in both contemporary and classic material. The anthology will pay a flat fee of $100 per story, word count from 1,000-8,000, though I am willing to be flexible for particularly impressive pieces that run longer.

I'll be both soliciting stories and accepting submissions of previously published material; if you have a favorite bi- or genderqueer short story in a speculative genre, suggest it in the comments of this post. If you have previously published a genderqueer or sexually fluid short story in a speculative genre, please submit with the prior publication information in a cover letter and the story following below in the body of the email, not as an attachment. The deadline for both story suggestions and submissions is November 15th, 2011.

Call for Gay/ Lesbian Stories: Whispered Vows (Storm Moon Press)

In fifteenth-century Rome, legend has it that a Roman priest was imprisoned and martyred for illegally marrying couples in secret. Whispered Vows takes the theme of secret marriages from St. Valentine and runs with it—or shall we say elopes? This anthology will celebrate forbidden love, overcoming obstacles, and the timeless romance at the core of Valentine's Day, all laced with an edge of GLBT er0tic passion.

Happily-ever-after endings are a requirement for this anthology, as well as stories that have strong er0tic romance elements at their cores. We also encourage that the marriage not be the perfect bow tied at the end of the story, but a plot element that carries its own weight and consequences. Are your characters running from the law, from their families, from another lover? Flexible definitions of marriage are also welcome in order to keep the door open for genres beyond contemporary and historical. They will, however, need to be well thought out and integral to the progression of the characters.

Call for GLBT Stories: The Third Annual Saint and Sinners Short Fiction Contest

We are pleased to announce the Saints and Sinners GLBT Literary Festival’s Third Annual Short Fiction Contest. SAS Fest is seeking original, unpublished short stories between 5,000 and 7,000 words with GLBT content on the broad theme of “Saints and Sinners.”

Judge: Dorothy Allison. The author of Bastard Out of Carolina and Cavedweller, Allison will select the winning stories.

Prize: One grand prize of $250 and two second place prizes of $50 will be awarded. In addition, the top stories will be published in an anthology from QueerMojo, an imprint of Rebel Satori Press. There will also be a book release party to promote the Saints and Sinners Literary Festival in New Orleans May, 2012.

Eligibility:

* The contest is open to authors at all stages of their careers and to stories in all genres.
* Only previously unpublished stories will be accepted.
* Stories that won this contest in previous years are ineligible; their authors remain eligible but must submit new work.
* Stories submitted to this contest in previous years that did not place are eligible.
* Stories that have won any other writing contest are ineligible.

Call for submissions: Anthology Of South Asian Queer Er0tica [title forthcoming] to be published by Tranquebar Press in 2012.


Who can write:

We want to foreground the queer voices of people living in or originally from South Asia. Queer includes but is not restricted to identities like lesbian, bis3xual, gay, transgender, inters3x, hijra, kothi, questioning, genderqueer, genderfluid and pans3xual. Authors do not necessarily have to identify with one or more of these identities but the stories they submit should reflect non-normative genders, s3xualities, lives and perspectives.

How to submit:

• We are looking for short stories with a word limit of no less than 3000 words. We regret that we are unable to include poetry.
• All submissions should be in English. Translations from other languages are allowed as long as the author owns the rights to the translation as well.
• Please submit the story as an email attachment on a word document. Please include a title and word count.
• Do not include your name or any other identifiers in the word document. As we are using a blind submissions process, we will have to reject submissions that indicate the author’s identity in the body of the story.
• Authors will be informed whether their work is selected by mid-October. At that time, we will request you to provide a name under which you wish to be published and a short bio.
• All selected authors will receive a one-time payment. The copyright of the story will remain with the author.

In those original Arabian Entertainments, the king is on a killing spree–marrying a new woman each night and killing her in the morning. Enter the learned Scheherazade. She volunteers to marry the king and tells him a compelling story each night. Each morning he agrees to let her live one more day. With her stories, she saves her own life and the lives of all the women in the kingdom. Her stories are not overtly persuasive, but rather entertaining (buying time), suspenseful (how could he kill her before he finds out what happens next?) Or stealthy/subversive/heart-opening (quietly influencing the king’s domination-consciousness through the magic of storytelling). The Queer Retelling

The power dynamics of the original text come through in the queer retelling. The concept: In a hotel room in an unnamed state capital, a young gay rent boy tells stories to his regular John, a Republican state senator, in order to delay the introduction of anti-gay legislation.

The interior stories in this collection will consist of new work and retold fables by contemporary writers. (Maybe you?)

The stories can be literal retellings of the original 1,001 stories–or have parallels–but neither is required. I’m just looking for queer fabulist stories, suspenseful stories, Luis Jorge Borges-style shorts, and/or stories you’d truly want to read to your lover at night (even if he’s not a senator). What kind of story would convince a closeted senator to delay introduction of his bill?

Stories can be 1,000 to 5,000 words — longer stories should be suspenseful so they’ll lend themselves to be told over several nights.
