Position Duties:
Editing
• Works with all magazine and online editors on scheduling line edits, offering critical analysis
• Assists online editors in posting headlines and articles to the site at specified times throughout the day
• Supervising copy editing and fact-checking
Workflow Management
• Trafficking stories from assignment through production
• Establishes meeting and deadline schedules
• Makes decisions about scheduling and other shipping-related needs
• Assists in enforcing deadlines and ensuring that the magazine and site content is on time
• Attends editorial and production meetings to be aware of procedures and the progress of all editorial material
• Prepares editorial production reports for the magazine and site as needed
• Works on scheduling and guiding editorial staff in individual micro-level planning and establishes effective means for keeping staff apprised of impending deadlines
• Prepares editorial-configuration (pagination) for distribution to editorial and advertising departments
• Negotiates final pagination configuration with Publisher, Editor in Chief, and Art Director to address effectively all parties concerns
• Works with production department to ensure editorial department’s scheduling and deadlines are on target
• Serves as a point person for accounting department on matters involving writers’ fees, contracts, and payments and manages editorial budgets
• Plays active role in idea-generation meetings, and serves as enthusiastic editorial presence
• Primary editorial staff member responsible for managing editorial expenses for writing, photo, and travel and assisting the team to keep spending within budgetary limits.
• Other tasks as assigned by the Editor in Chief.
Skills & Qualification Requirements
At least five years' experience in publication editing; troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to efficiently facilitate editorial workflow; the ability to function calmly in frequent high-pressure deadline situations; the organizational ability and foresight to manage concurrent projects and simultaneously to plan and execute future projects; the ability to communicate assignments clearly and delegate projects to be independently completed as necessary; must understand and exercise the necessary level of diplomacy in interacting with coworkers and contributors; extensive experience with Macintosh computers and software.
