Job Description

The Gay & Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) seeks a full-time Education & Communications Manager/Specialist to join its small but very dedicated team in its Washington, DC office.

GLMA, the world's largest and oldest membership association of LGBT health professionals, was founded in 1981 with the mission of maximizing the quality of health services for LGBT people, promoting full civil rights, and fostering a professional climate in which the organization’s diverse members could reach their full potential. GLMA’s current mission is to ensure equality in health care for LGBT individuals and health professionals, and we work to achieve this mission by using the health expertise of our membership in professional education, public policy work, patient education and referrals, and the promotion of research.

GLMA’s Annual Conference is our signature educational event and brings together more than 400 health professionals from across the country and world for the largest scientific gathering devoted to LGBT health issues. GLMA is a national leader in public policy advocacy related to the full range of issues affecting LGBT health.

Responsibilities

GLMA seeks an Education & Communications Manager who will be responsible for the organization’s educational and communications programs. The Education Manager’s primary responsibility will be working with our conference management consultants to produce the Annual Conference. In addition, this staff member will be responsible for other GLMA educational programs. Examples of past educational activities include developing continuing education materials for members and promoting health training curriculum inclusive of LGBT health issues. The staff member will also produce and manage the organization’s communications, including online newsletters, weekly update and other emails, social media and press relations. The staff member may also assist with policy initiatives and other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual should ideally have:

• Experience in conceptualizing, developing and implementing educational programs and/or programmatic events, such as conferences
• Demonstrated strong attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong computer skills, particularly with the Internet, Microsoft Word and Excel
• Comfort with databases and basic html skills
• Experience communicating through social media for an organizational entity
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as well as independently
• Comfort with rapidly changing environments
• Demonstrated ability to operate within tight deadlines and to keep multiple projects moving forward simultaneously
• Familiarity with or knowledge of LGBT health issues
• Demonstrated commitment to advancing LGBT equality
• 4+ years of relevant nonprofit experience
• A bachelor’s or higher degree or relevant and comparable work experience
