Call for Submissions from Progressive Young Adult Catholics: Thirsting for Justice

Post date: 18 December 2010
Deadline: 23 December 2010

We want our diversity represented: male and female, ethnic diversity, sexual orientation, vocational/marital status, etc.

Gregory Pierce of ACTA Publications is working with us on an anthology of young adult Catholic voices on Social Justice (Tentative Title: Hungering and Thirsting for Justice, with a subtitle pointing to the fact that the authors are young adult Catholics).

This is the format Gregory is interested in following:

* 12 stories by 12 authors, each about a social justice issue. Each story should be about 2,000 words long. Gregory stressed that he’s not interested in opinion pieces, but in personal journeys as they relate to social justice (i.e.: What experience(s) led you to fighting for workers’ rights? Women’s ordination? Same-sex marriage?).
* Diversity. In the combination of 12 pieces, we want our diversity represented: male and female, ethnic diversity, sexual orientation, vocational/marital status, etc.

Chosen writers will receive a small stipend for the publication of their piece, with the possibility of a percentage of royalties.

If you’re interested in the project, here’s what I need from you:

1. A brief summary of the piece you’d like to write. This can include a tentative title and MUST include 2-3 sentences summarizing the content of the piece and which social justice issue is pivotal to it. You do NOT need to write the full piece until you get the go-ahead from us.
2. Please email these summaries to the Catholic blog account (nextgen-blog@cta-usa.org) by December 23. Kate Ward and I will collect the summaries and put together a book proposal to submit to ACTA by mid-January.
