An effective movement against patriarchy and heterosexism will require unparalleled collaboration between everyone, at all levels of power, who sees the collective value in engendering a more just and equitable society. How do we practice feminist solidarity across lines of gender, sexuality, race, ability, class, nationality and citizenship? How do we acknowledge and respect difference, while transcending borders in a common struggle for liberation? With patterns of domination so deeply entrenched in our social, sexual and political relationships, how do we confront oppression on both a personal and political level?
Briarpatch is seeking submissions for its May/June 2011 issue, “Engendering Emancipation,” which will explore power relations in the context of gender and sexuality. If you’ve got something to contribute to this discussion, then we want to hear from you! We are looking for articles, essays, investigative reportage, news briefs, poetry, humour, comics, artwork and photography rooted in an anti-colonial and anti-capitalist analysis.
We also invite organizations and groups who could use this issue of Briarpatch as an organizing/educational tool to get in touch to discuss opportunities for shared distribution, bulk issue orders and possible in-kind exchanges.
Possible topics include (but are by no means limited to):
-the role of men in feminism and anti-violence movements
-gender relations in corporate and public spaces such as schools, prisons and workplaces
-women and migration
-feminization of poverty
-politics of sex work
-power relations within queer communities
-links between feminism and LGBTQ activism
-psychology of gender violence
-women and the pharmaceutical industry
-politics of menstruation
-the role of sexual education in challenging power imbalances
-interviews with leading thinkers
-profiles of people, groups or communities engaging these and related issues
Queries are due January 10, 2011. If your query is accepted, first drafts will be due by February 15. Your query should outline what ground your contribution will cover, give an estimated word count, and indicate your relevant experience or background in writing about the issue. If you haven’t written for Briarpatch before, please provide a brief writing sample.
