Green Carnation Prize Shorlisted Authors Reading: Christopher Fowler, Jonathan Kemp and Rupert Smith Thursday 18th Nov 7.30pm

Gay's the Word bookshop proudly presents... The Green Carnation Prize Shortlisted author Read-off: In their first UK Homo-literate Hustings. It's going to be Grammatic!

2010 is the inaugural year of the Green Carnation Prize; a new UK literary award that recognizes gay men’s fiction and memoirs. The judging panel - Paul Magrs, Nick Campbell, Lesley Cookman, Katy Manning and Simon Savidge- are on the hunt for something really special; excellent writing… readability…that elusive page-turning quality… something new… the ability to place us in someone else’s shoes… all the essential qualities of a great book. On this year’s shortlist are:

Paperboy – Christopher Fowler (Bantam Books)
God Says No – James Hannaham (McSweeneys)
London Triptych – Jonathan Kemp (Myriad Editions)
Children of the Sun – Max Schaefer (Granta)
Man’s World – Rupert Smith (Arcadia Books)

Prior to the winner being announced on December 1st (World AIDS Day) there will be one final opportunity for the judges and the public to hear three of this year’s shortlisted authors –
Christopher Fowler, Jonathan Kemp and Rupert Smith – read from their books. A sort of homo-literate hustings, if you will. Unfortunately Max Schaefer and James Hannaham will both be out of the country that week and extend their apologies and best to the other authors...

The three authors reading, and their shortlisted books:

Paperboy by Christopher Fowler

Delightfully written, this funny and engrossing memoir is a wonderful evocation of a Fifties and Sixties childhood. The descriptions are so vivid and recognisable, you’re back there with him on every page - CHOICE MAGAZINE

The book is fabulous, and I hope it sells forever. - JOANNE HARRIS

London Triptych by Jonathan Kemp

London itself, in its relentless indifference, is as powerful a presence here as the three gay men whose lives it absorbs. - The Times Literary Supplement

Man’s World by Rupert Smith

Funny, dirty, deeply romantic, Man's World is a wonderfully evocative novel that hurdles between now and our recent history in a wild and emotional walzer ride - Jake Arnott
