Announcing the highly anticipated New Mardi Gras Short Story Competition: A national competition for members and friends of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer community (GLBTQ).
For the sixth year in row, New Mardi Gras includes this competition in the 2011 Festival season with the support of The Bookshop Darlinghurst, The Feminist Bookshop, gay-ebooks,
Gleebooks, NSW Writers’ Centre and Sydney Writers’ Centre.
Entry Requirements
Theme: ‘Home’
Authors are free to interpret the theme in any way they wish.
Entrants need not identify as GLBTQ, but the story must be GLBTQ themed.
Word Limit: 750 words. Closing Date: Entries must be emailed by 5pm on 7th January 2011
Judging
The competition winners will be decided by three independent judges.

Winners’ Event: All prize winners as well as authors of selected highly commended entries will be invited to read their stories at a special Mardi Gras Festival event.
Publication: All prize-winning and highly commended entries will be published by gay-ebooks, and will appear on the New Mardi Gras website for the duration of the 2011 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival.
Conditions of Entry:
1. Your entry should be GLBTIQ themed and not previously published or awarded a competition prize.
2. Maximum story length is 750 words. Longer stories will not be accepted.
3. Entries must be emailed by 5pm, 7 January 2011. Late entries will not be accepted.
4. Maximum word length must be respected; NMG reserves the right to disqualify any story exceeding 750 words (excluding the title). Specify length on application form.
5. Employees and members of the board of New Mardi Gras are ineligible to enter this competition.
6. The judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
7. Prize-winning and highly commended entries will be published by gay-ebooks as a free downloadable PDF anthology and will appear for the duration of the 2011 festival on the New Mardi Gras website. Copyright will remain with the authors.
Procedure on How to Enter:
8. Stories must be sent as an email attachment in Microsoft Word, or text format only. Email to festival@mardigras.org.au with the subject line: Att: Short Story Competition. Do not put your name anywhere on the story.
9. An application form is required from each author and should be sent in the same email as the story/stories. Entries without an application form will be considered invalid.
10. You can submit several stories but each attracts an entry fee. Full price $15, Concession $10. Concession fees are available to New Mardi Gras members, Youth entries, unemployed, and pension card holders. Scanned proof of concession must be provided.
