Deadline June 25 | Call for Submissions from Playwrights - Gay Play Day: a Festival of LGBT Theater (Canada)

Deadline: 25 June 2012

Gay Play Day is a festival of short plays by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered playwrights, running in Toronto on September 29 & 30th, 2012 (venue TBA). We are accepting submissions until June 25th at gayplayday@gmail.com

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Gay Play Day is now accepting submissions from playwrights and/or directors for the inaugural Gay Play Day festival which will take place at a downtown Toronto venue on September 29 & 30th, 2012. Gay Play Day is a festival of short plays written by LGBT writers about the LGBT experience.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
  • Each playwright and/or director may submit only one script—send us your best!
  • We are only accepting electronic submissions in Word format.
  • We are looking for short plays that run less than 15 minutes. Less is fine, longer is not. Ten minutes would be ideal.
  • The title page should include the playwright's name, the character list and a brief synopsis of the play.
  • The title page must also include the company's contact name (if different from playwright), address, phone number and email address.
  • Plays should contain no more than 4 characters.
  • Set and technical requirements should be fairly simple. We are talking basically lights up and lights down. Your set should also be minimal – a table and two chairs, for example. Nothing is even better!
  • Musicals, children’s shows, and any unsolicited longer one-act or full-length plays are not accepted and will not receive a response.
  • If selected, each company is responsible to cast and rehearse their own play.
  • A tech person will be provided by Gay Play Day for the tech rehearsal and performances.
  • Companies are not offered any financial compensation for their involvement, however the festival is a great format to showcase your creative talents.
  • A cash prize will be awarded to the play that wins the audience favourite award.
  • Gay Play Day is not associated with the Canadian Actors' Equity Association.
  • Applicants will be notified of inclusion in the festival by July 10th, 2012.

Deadline June 18 | Call for Papers: Childhood and its Discontents (ESC Journal | Canada/ worldwide)

Deadline: 18 June 2012

ESC: English Studies in Canada invites submissions for a Special Issue on "Childhood and Its Discontents," guest edited by Nat Hurley.

No figure more fully embodies the paradoxical demands of civilization than the child. At once beloved and overdetermined, the child figures nothing less than our most treasured cultural fantasies and so also becomes the repository of our worst fears. Scholars across the fields of children’s literature, queer theory, gothic studies, critical pedagogy, gender studies, and critical race studies increasingly highlight the ways children—and representations of them—exceed (and so flag the limits of) the utopianism governing their very conceptualization. In effect, childhood has become a fascinatingly unruly object of study.

To the extent that discontentment indexes a dissatisfaction with prevailing social and cultural conditions, this special issue on Childhood and Its Discontents invites essays that reflect on childhood’s unruly resistance to the norms, genres, and cultural regimes that aim to normalize it. In the same spirit in which Freud brought to light the counterintuitive instincts that underwrite and undermine the very idea of civilization, so too do we seek essays for this volume that highlight the central tensions at the heart of childhood and its representations.

ESC invites papers for this special issue on “Childhood and its Discontents” from scholars, writers, artists, and activists with an interest in the historical conditions, theoretical implications, and emergent potentialities of the concept of childhood. We accept submissions from any geographical location. The journal seeks to publish a diversity of historical, national, and theoretical perspectives. We warmly welcome interdisciplinary approaches to this topic and are happy to consider essays informed by critical race studies, feminist theory, ethnographic studies, philosophy of education, film studies, queer studies, postcolonial studies, political economy, critical pedagogy studies, and ecocriticism as well as relevant others.

Deadline for submission of articles (maximum of 8500 words) is 18 June 2012.

Note to contributors: ESC normally accepts black and white images, up to a limit of six per article. Contributors are responsible for securing permissions.

Please forward completed essays, in MLA format, along with a 100-word abstract and a 50-word bio to Nat Hurley, Assistant Professor, Department of English and Film Studies at the University of Alberta. Please send electronic submissions to nhurley@ualberta.ca. The journal’s style sheet is available at http://www.arts.ualberta.ca/~esc/submit.php.

ESC: English Studies in Canada is a quarterly journal of scholarship and criticism concerned with the study of literature and culture. Recent special issues include “Traffic” (Eds. Cecily Devereux and Mark Simpson), “Guilt” (Ed. J. Faflak), “Sound/Poetry/Event” (Eds. L. Cabri, A. Levy, P. Quartermain), and “Skin” (Ed. J. Emberley).

Call for LGBTQ Submissions: Plenitude Magazine's Inaugural Issue (paying market | Canada/ worldwide)

Plenitude Magazine is currently accepting submissions for the inaugural issue. Issue 1 will be launched in August, 2012. In order to be considered for Issue 1, we recommend submitting before July 10, 2012.

ABOUT PLENITUDE MAGAZINE

Plenitude Magazine aims to promote the growth and development of LGBTQ literature through a biannual publication of literary fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic narrative and short film by both emerging and established LGBTQ writers.

We define queer literature and arts as works created by LGBTQ people, rather than works which feature queer content alone. That said, we recognise that Plenitude readers are hungry for exceptional work that reflects queer histories, cultures, experiences, and sensibilities. We consider every submission with critical analyses, sometimes turning to an advisory editorial board of writers, academics, and community advocates.

WHAT WE PUBLISH

Plenitude aims to complicate expressions of queerness through the publication of diverse, sophisticated literary writing, graphic narrative and short film, from the very subtle to the brash and unrelenting.

We are not interested in genre writing, political essays, or rants. We are only interested in literary fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic narrative and short film at this time. If you are interested in writing political essays, or other critical analyses, please contact us about contributing to our blog – we would love to hear from you.

Fiction: Please send up to 2 stories per submission, double spaced, paginated, 12 point font, maximum 8,000 words per story.

Nonfiction: Please send up to 2 pieces per submission, double spaced, paginated, 12 point font, maximum 8,000 words per piece.

Poetry: Please send up to 10 pages of poetry, single spaced, paginated, 12 point font.

Graphic Narrative: Please send up to 10 pages of graphic narrative.

Film: Please send us short film of no more than 10 minutes.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Email submissions to editor@plenitudemagazine.ca. Please place cover letter with your name, contact information, name of piece(s), and brief bio in the body of the email. Please title the files with your name, followed by name of piece. For example “ROUTLEY, ANDREA – HABITAT”

Attach text submissions as BOTH docx AND PDF file; this is to ensure we are seeing what you are seeing (especially for poetry submissions).

Attach graphic submissions as JPG or PNG files, bounding volume of 1600 x 1600, 96 ppi.

Attach short film as Quicktime movie file with H264 compression, or send us a link.

All unsolicited submissions should be unpublished, original works.

We accept simultaneous submissions; in the event that your submission is accepted elsewhere, please let us know right away.

We are still working out our budget and confirming sponsors, so pay is still to be determined right now. We will let you know our rates as soon as we can!

Deadline June 1 | Call for Submissions: Poetry is Dead's Queer Issue (Canada)

Deadline: 1 June 2012

For the sixth issue of Poetry Is Dead we welcome submissions from Queer writers, with a strong emphasis on Queer Canadian contributions. As always, Poetry Is Dead is interested in work that runs the gamut of forms—from spoken word to experimental language-focused work.

In 2011, what are the questions asked of Queer writers? What new vocabularies need to be recorded today?

We welcome writing that engages the contemporary, the daily, and the seemingly trivial. Digital networks — spaces of emotional anomie and unintended intimacies — now mediate and organize many Queer experiences. You are invited to experiment with the erotic gaze of the webcam, to reformulate the confessional booth of the Craiglist Missed Connections posting, to explore the poetic lineation inherent in Gmail Chat logs, to otherwise fuck with and foreground the language of online identities.

We invite contributions that question categories of sexuality and gender, that indulge what is otherwise taboo, that speak to the diversity, rather than the homogeneity, of sexual experience.

In recognition of the fact that many of Canada’s foremost practitioners and pioneers of experimental prose have been Queer or lesbian — including Nicole Brossard and Gail Scott — this issue welcomes texts that exist between poetry and fiction.

Guest Editor: Alex Leslie (alexleslie.wordpress.com)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We publish poetry. How you define poetry is up to you.

To submit poems use the link below to reach our Submishmash form. Include your name, email and home address with your submission. If you would like comments on your submission, please note that, and we will get back to you. Please send no more than five poems.

If possible, send us links to digital versions of your self.

Please check our website for the current call for submissions. If you are wanting to write a review or essay, please query the editor first. The editor can be reached at editor@poetryisdead.ca. We do not accept submissions via email. Please use the form linked below.

Deadline: 25 June 2011

Slash Books is looking for short stories (500 - 20K words) that explore gay, lesbian, or alternative lifestyle romance. Be creative!

Sword and Sorcery. Supernatural creatures. Magic. S3xy and s3nsuous, the characters in "Queer Magic" live in worlds where the supernatural is sometimes hidden, sometimes well known, but always real. Each story in this anthology includes aspects of magic or the supernatural, from time travel to ex0tic realms.

The chosen stories will be published in print and e-book form, and all authors will be compensated based on story length as well as per item sold, with a typical fee of approximately $100 CAD per story. Each author will also get up to three printed copies of the full anthology free of charge. Your story should focus on the relationship and its evolution. What is the Aboriginal Women’s Leadership Circle?

Women’s Worlds 2011 aspires to be a powerful celebration of voices and diversity. As Canada is host to this important event, the meaningful participation of Aboriginal women and the prominence of Indigenous women's issues are essential. WW 2011 participants should come away with a deeper understanding of Aboriginal women and Indigenous women, and with recognition of their immense knowledge and leadership as inspiration for a better world. This is why we identified the value of creating an Aboriginal Women's Leadership Circle, a volunteer advisory body comprised of Aboriginal [First Nations, Inuit, Métis] women. Just as the event's content and program should challenge colonialism and neo-colonialism in its various forms, the internal organizing process should, too. We believe the non-tokenistic involvement of Aboriginal/Indigenous women is vital to feminist organizing and convening.

This call for submissions is open to established and new writers alike. If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at s3xy writing, then this is a perfect opportunity! Please note that since all profits from this collection go toward Fredericton Pride, this is not a paying call for submissions.

Intrigued? Check out the nitty gritty details below:

Er0tic Poetry:

-All poems must have both er0tic and LGBTQ content. Currently accepting single poems (up to 4 pages single spaced) and small collections. Authors selected for the anthology will also be asked to provide a short bio. Pseudonymous submissions accepted, but please include your real name in the submission for legal purposes.

Er0tic/ Er0tic Romance Short Stories:

What we want:

- Smart, s3x-positive, LGBT-themed er0tica and er0tic r0mance short stories between 1000-9000 words, with a preference for stories between 2500 and 5000 words.

- Works by authors who are 18 years and older, which follow our Just Love theme. We want stories that feature love or the potential for love, with a happy-ever-after (or happy for now) ending.

-Clean, polished, literary works (not rough/first drafts) with an er0tic focus. Following the norms of the genre, please avoid heavy euphemisms when describing s3x.

-Electronic submissions only, double-spaced, 12-pt. times new roman font, in .doc (NOT .docx) or .rtf format.

-Previously published works considered, provided you have the rights to allow our publication in ebook and POD formats. We ask only for non-exclusive anthology rights.

What we don’t want:

-Anything with a negative attitude toward s3x.

-Horror, gore, b3stiality, or other squick factors. (please note that tastefully-depicted consensual BD SM is just fine)

-non-er0tic, or exclusively heterosexual er0tic works. These could be wonderful stories, but they don’t fit our theme, thank you.

Please send all queries and submissions to Anthology2011@frederictonpride.org.

Submission Deadline for both collections is May 1st, 2011, for publication in early summer. Multiple submissions accepted.

Call For Submissions: ‘Resilience’ A Queer Collaborative Art Installation in partnership with Mayworks

What: a collaborative visual art installation (photography, short video and multi-media arts) that celebrates Toronto’s LGBTTQ2SIA spectrum people as working people, as bodies of resilience and resistance, and as storytellers. This installation will be part of the Mayworks Festival this year (exhibiting from May 12-19th) (www.mayworks.ca),

Why: As queer people, it often feels like we are either resisting outright homophobic and transphobic violence, or we are resisting being sucked into the mainstream. We can do better.

This exhibit aims to celebrate queer resistance, express struggles in the workplace, challenge ideas of heteronormativity, identity roles, and much more.

Who: The People Project is an organization that believes in the power of arts and culture-building to empower communities against homophobic and transphobic violence. This exhibit is being curated by the People Project, the Hispanic Development Council and the Mayworks Festival. And hopefully features you!

We are encouraging young queer artists of Toronto to send us submissions by Monday February 14th, 12am.

8-10 selected artists will have their work exhibited during a Community celebration (likely at the raging spoon) and will receive a $100 honorarium.

If Interested, please follow these five easy steps and email (peopleprojectsubmissions@gmail.com)

1) 50-100 words about why you think your art fits into the theme of the exhibit
