Job Opening: National Managing Editor for Xtra, Canada's Premiere Gay and Lesbian Media Group

Post date: 14 June 2011
We need an ambitious, experienced managing editor to oversee national operations of our website and three community newspapers --immediately. We will fill this position as soon as we meet the right candidate.

Passionate about reporting, you embrace advocacy journalism, and are committed to fairness and accuracy. Highly organized, you're an eager team player and a natural leader of creative people.

You're up for the unique challenge of managing the fast-paced editorial content generation for our website and packaging process for print publications in Ottawa, Toronto Vancouver.

Experience in a similar leadership or management role in mainstream or alternative journalism is a great asset.

A proven background in professional journalism, strong news judgment and writing skills, and knowledge of editorial standards and defamation law are essential.

We strive for 'web first' content. You will coordinate assignments and manage the work of a diverse team of staff reporters and freelance contributors. You will draw from website content to produce engaging news packages in print editions.

You will compile issue line-ups and coordinate content elements, and then shepherd content through the production process, ensuring each issue is completed on time and to the highest professional standard.

We're Canada's premiere gay and lesbian media group, Xtra -- but being gay isn't a requirement for the job.

Familiarity with our publications and the gay and lesbian communities and their politics is a tremendous asset.

We offer an energetic, progressive work environment filled with enthusiastic, creative professionals. This full-time salaried position includes a generous benefits package and three weeks annual vacation.

If you're qualified, want a new and exciting challenge, and know you are the right, send us your resume today.
