Job Opening: Copy Editor for Here Media, Publisher of LGBT-Targeted Magazines (New York)

Here Media operates the most recognized LGBT-targeted brands through its television, print, online and book publishing divisions. Here Media properties include here! Networks, Out, The Advocate and HIV Plus. Additionally, the Here Media digital brands encompass: Out.com, Advocate.com, OutTraveler.com, shewired.com and HIVPlusMag.com.

Specific Duties:

Editing

Edits articles, captions, graphics and all other text elements for grammar, spelling, and punctuation as well as consistency with and conformity to the company style manual.
Collaborates with assigning editor (or art director) on need to trim or extend copy as needed when article length does not fit layout.

Points out to assigning editor (or managing editor or other senior-level editor if not available) how copy has potential to be misunderstood by a reader, and then implements agreed solution.
Makes minor adjustments to sentence and paragraph structurebut always consulting first with articles assigning editor to ensure that substance of certain wording is not intentional for a specific effect and to ensure that the writers words or a sources quote is not being misinterpreted.

Makes the assigning editor aware of any significant problems encountered during the editing process to seek guidance for making adjustments.

Documents problems encountered during the copy-editing or proofreading stage for subsequent team members benefit and tracks changes in routing sheets.

Meets set deadlines to ensure prompt transition between editorial production stages.
Performs other duties as assigned by the managing editor.

Error Checking

Reviews print article layouts for potential errors in text overrun, folios, styling consistency, widows/orphans, etc.

Collaborates with assigning editor (or managing editor) to verify factual accuracy on issues that raise red flags.

Determines whether material submitted for publication contains libel, slander, obscenity, or other material potentially harmful to the reputation of the corporation and its brandsor that exposes the company to legal actionsand brings potential problems to the attention of the managing editor or other senior-level editor.

Skill Requirements:

At least four years' experience in print and online copy editing.

Ability to complete assignments with a high degree of accuracy while working under tight deadline pressure.

Ability to work overtime or flex hours on short notice to ensure that deadlines are met.

Tactfulness for querying writers and sources when it is necessary to work with them directly.
Proficiency with Macintosh computers and software.

At least a bachelors degree in journalism or English.

Familiarity with LGBT culture and history is a big plus.
