I am a graduate student at UBC in the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature program. My research focuses on queer literature for young adults–basically literature that is marketed to LGBT young people and contains queer protagonists or themes. I have noticed the absence of queer protagonists of colour, however, and it is my hope to bring greater visibility to these types of characters and in doing so, also intend to use this anthology as a way of highlighting the lives of non-white LGBT youth. At this time I am looking for short stories (approximately 15 to 25 pages) that concentrate on the lives of queer, non-white characters. I encourage the creation of characters that are transgender, transsexual, intersex, gay, and lesbian, or of any other non-heteronormative persuasion. I will be accepting abstracts and suggestions until June, 2011 or until I am swamped with submissions, whichever happens first.
In terms of compensation, there is no solid plan at this time, except that all authors in the collection will get a copy of the text. Hopefully with cooperation from a publisher or with the help of a grant, an honorarium will also be available. Thank you for your participation and support of this project.
