Writers and Photographers Needed by Online Gay Magazine

Post date: 08 September 2010
Deadline: open

We're looking for WRITERS! And, Photographers...Seriously!

Yeah, buddy, we're looking at YOU! (you, too, lady!) We want/need to grow the website and we can't do it alone! In case you haven't noticed, there have been a few changes around here lately...our beloved founder, Bill W hasn't been posting as often due to some changes in HIS work life, (but, he's still hard at work behind the scenes) and, I've INCREASED my postings due to some changes in MY work life (I got laid off from my "real job"). We want to continue to grow and improve the website, and have already started making a few changes with an attempt at MORE postings per day and MORE national news and pop media coverage but we want to grow the site even further, with bigger and better coverage of local events and we need a bit of help to do it.

What we're looking for are some talented, responsible, LGBTQ identified, local writers to beef up our coverage on certain areas of local interest. The ideal candidates would be RELIABLE, non-flaky, and have a flair and love of writing about things they are passionate about. AND, it would be very, very flexible...a weekly column, or bi-weekly or even monthly, or a piece here and there...OR, are you dying to find an audience for that great idea for a feature piece you've been wanting to write? We'd love to talk to you about it!

But, we are in the market to cover some SPECIFIC areas...here's our wish list:

1. MUSIC! Probably our #1 area we need to beef up...Would love to find someone to do at the very least, a weekly column about local live music events. The ideal person, or persons, would have a WIDE variety of musical interests, not just a few artists or genres they care about. If you are a music nut, own a thousand cds/records or have 5000 songs on your Ipod and/or regularly attend live music events, this would be a great opportunity to get into music writing! It would also be great to get someone interested in music feature stories and possible interviews with musical artists. Wouldn't you kill to interview Courtney Love!

2. LGBTQ events coverage. Ideally this would be someone who already goes to tons of local events: drag shows, fundraisers, bar events, sports events, etc. and is an enthusiastic/outgoing type not too shy to go up to people and ask them questions or take their picture. Aspiring photographers, this could be the gig for you!

3. A Family columnist: an LGBTQ parent of school age child/ren to do a bi-weekly, or monthly column about family friendly events. The other alternate outlets in town seem to ignore the family crowd; personally, we feel there could be MORE coverage of these events. Not only do queer families need to know where they might feel welcomed, so do straight families with liberal/progressive values. It needs to be covered!

4. Movies. I originally started out writing on here planning to write mainly about film, but doing theater coverage is a full time job. We really need to beef up our movie coverage!

5. ? Fill in the blank! Is there something YOU would like to see covered on SGS that's not being covered much? Sports? Classical music? Health and Fitness? Macrame? Let us know! We'll consider it!

So, what do you need to do if any of this interests you? Send us an email and tell us a little about yourself and what you would like to do. We also need to see an example of your writing...ideally, you are already a blogger but if not, or if it has been awhile since you've written anything, sit down and write an audition column or piece that shows us what you've got...it doesn't have to be 5000 pages long, just something that demonstrates you can wittily put words together with a semblance of good spelling, punctuation and grammar...not much to ask for, really...(Oh, and as for compensation, that is something to be discussed privately but I'll say this...if you're looking for an answer to your unemployment problems, or are thinking this is your ticket to a highly paid career as a professional writer, this ain't the place...yet. I just want to be upfront about it so you don't get your hopes up that you're going to be the next Stephen King or Dan Savage or some other such millionaire writer...)

So, if this sounds interesting to you, OR, you know someone who MIGHT be interested, let us KNOW! OR, if you don't want to WRITE for us, but just have an idea or suggestion for improvement, let us know THAT, too...We're anxious to hear from you...after all, without you, we are nothing but another readerless blog among millions of readerless blogs!
