Deadline: 17 September 2010
Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Young Creators Unit (YCU) provides a supportive and artistically rigorous space for four queer-identified artists (age 25 and under) to develop and perform their own original, 25-minute, solo performance piece. Under the creative mentorship of YCU Director Evalyn Parry, members of the YCU workshop their material through the weekly Unit meetings, and present their final works at the 32nd Rhubarb Festival in February 2011.
The YCU is dedicated to developing the work of promising, emerging queer creator/performers. We are interested in work that pushes the boundaries of theatrical creation, and in keeping with Buddies’ mandate, have a particular interest in work that reflects “queerness” either in terms of LGBT identity, and/or in terms of difference, being outside the mainstream, challenging in both content and form.
The 2010/11 Unit will meet on Mondays for 12 weeks, beginning October 18, 2010, thru Jan 31st 2011. In February, each YCU artist is paired with a director to work toward the final presentation of their show at Rhubarb. To participate, you MUST be available for all YCU meetings, plus be available for additional rehearsal time in January and February. Participants will receive an honorarium for their participation.
The YCU supports a wide definition of “performance”, and sets no particular limitations or guidelines as to the nature of the proposed projects (aside from a time limitation of 25 minutes). However, we do ask that the requested writing sample / support materials be original, and closely related to the proposed project, so we can fairly evaluate the project’s feasibility.
