Hi, My name is Miyuki Baker and I'm the founder of a new website called Asian, Gay and Proud .
The website is a safe space for Asian Pacific-Islander American members of the LGBTQ (and questioning) community to find queer APIA coming out stories, links and other resources. The whole website is an attempt to fill the lack of queer APIA media and to help queer APIA folk to come out and be more visible.
We're currently lacking in the coming out stories department and any contributions there would be greatly appreciated. They can be anonymous or not. In addition, they can be about any type of coming out story--in other words, it doesn't have to be about when you came out to your parents. How about when you realized yourself you were queer? Or when you told your penpal? We want to hear about it!
The newest feature on the site is called Out and Successful, which highlights queer Asian people who are strong, inspiring, creative and proud to be
queer. There's a new interview up every Wednesday--here's an example:Kathy E.
The Out and Successful feature has been really rewarding and I'm hoping that it continues to expand with people from all types of backgrounds. I would absolutely LOVE it if you could be a part of Out and Successful! Please consider doing it no matter what your background is--this is about diversity! Success is being out and proud, so if you're out and you want to tell the world, answer the following five questions, send me a brief bio and photo of yourself:
1. Who? name, age, what you identify as (or not)
2. What? what do you do for a living or things you would like to do
3. When did you come out? Any stories?
4. How did coming out impact your career or relationships with others?
5. Advice you can give to other Asian, Gay & Proud readers.
If you think that these questions are too limiting, I've also conducted three personal interviews via Skype and gchat so please keep in mind that there are other options available. If you're interested in being a part of Out and Successful, please send me an email with your questions and answers at ebaker1@swarthmore.edu.
I hope you can contribute as I feel there simply aren't enough resources for queer Asian Americans. We need more queer Asian role models out there!
I look forward to hearing from you!
