Call for Submissions: Assaracus, a New Gay-Themed Print Journal (Brother Journal of Ganymede)

Post date: 22 September 2010

Deadline: open

ASSARACUS. A new gay-themed print journal, Assaracus, is in the works and will debut from Sibling Rivalry Press in 2011. Assaracus (pronounced ASS-UH-RACK-US) will continue in the tradition of Ganymede – but with an underground feel – similar to Mouth of the Dragon and other influential publications of the 70′s and 80′s.

Each issue of Assaracus, which will initially be a quarterly publication, will feature a portfolio of work by a small number of gay male poets (up to ten poems by each individual – a true showcase of talent). In order to be considered for the first issue, please submit a significant selection of your work in PDF, DOC, or DOCX format to siblingrivalrypress@gmail.com with the subject line “Assaracus Submission” and your name (“Assaracus Submission Levi Johnston,” for example).

Work that has been previously posted on a personal website is welcome. We dig blogs. In fact, if you have blog, send us a link to it when you submit. Previously published work is also acceptable so long as you retain the rights to republish.

Each issue will be built around the selected poets and will showcase the variety within the queer poetry community. The poets chosen for each issue may be asked to submit more work or to take part in an interview which would run alongside the poems. The chosen poets will retain all rights to their work, will receive a free print copy of the issue, and will be endlessly promoted throughout the literary universe.

UPDATE ON DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: There is a rolling deadline for submissions to Assaracus, as when the first issue is filled, we will move on to accepting submissions for the second issue, and so on. Thanks to all those who have submitted thus far! We’ve seen some fantastic poetry! And a big shout out to Duotrope! We see where our traffic comes from!

CHAPBOOKS/FULL-LENGTH MANUSCRIPT. Now accepting chapbooks (40-80 pages) and full-length manuscripts (Over 80 pages) for consideration. Our goal is to publish at least four chapbooks and/or full-length collections of poetry each year, beginning with 2011. What we like: GLBT-themed poetry, feminist poetry, narrative poetry, experimental poetry, shocking poetry, political poetry, erotic poetry, prose poetry, poetry paired with art or photography, poetry you wouldn’t want your grandmother to read, poetry rejected by other presses because the poems have been published on a blog, and poetry rejected by other presses because those other presses aren’t as cool as us.

Send a PDF file of your manuscript to siblingrivalrypress@gmail.com, along with a bio and links to any writing-related websites you maintain. We hope to respond to all submissions within one month – because we’ll know what we want to publish when we see it. It will make our heart sing. Submission period remains open until the four books for 2011 are selected. If you are selected, you will be offered a contract for publication to review which will detail press responsibilities, author responsibilities, and an outline of royalty terms. All of our authors will be offered the same contract.

Simultaneous submissions are fine.
