Masque Magazine, Stanford's journal of queer art and literary expression, was a biannual publication from 1996 through 2004, featuring photography, prose, poetry, and art by members of the Stanford community. Once distributed nationally, Masque won the Vice Versa National Press Award for Best New Publication in 1998. In 2003, the magazine received the Independent Press Association Campus Alternative Journalism Award for Best Design. Founded in response to a series of homophobic hate crimes on campus in 1996, the publication was dedicated to promoting queer awareness among peers. Masque is a magazine for everyone. We define queer as anything that falls outside of the mainstream, challenges its audiences, reacts, thinks and provokes. Queer is a subjectivity, not a subject matter. Copies of every issue of Masque can be viewed in the University Archives section of Green Library.
