Call for Submissions: Intergenerational Voices on the Bay Area Lesbian Movement (Aunt Lute press)

Post date: 08 March 2012
Deadline: 15 March 2012

Call for Submissions for “Struggle, Then and Now: Intergenerational Voices on the Bay Area Lesbian Movement”

We are looking for submissions for our upcoming community event, “Struggle, Then and Now: Intergenerational Voices on the Bay Area Lesbian Movement,” to be held at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley on April 26, 2012. The event aims to foster intergenerational dialogue by focusing on how the legacy of Bay Area lesbians from the 1960s and 1970s continues to impact lesbian/bisexual women living and working here today. For more details about the event, see our Events Page.

We invite prose submissions of up to 1200 words that contextualize the writer’s lived experience within the broader sociopolitical history of the Bay Area lesbian movement, and specifically address the question of how the struggle today relates to the struggle then. For an insightful look at the movement of the ’60s and ’70s, check out Judy’s blog posts. As always, Aunt Lute is especially interested in underrepresented voices, and welcomes pieces focusing on multicultural and/or working class perspectives.

SELECTION PROCESS

From the submissions, four to six writers will be selected to read their work and participate in a roundtable with Judy Grahn at the April 26th event. In addition to participating in the La Peña event, selected writers will receive signed copies of Judy Grahn’s forthcoming memoir A Simple Revolution when it is released, and an Aunt Lute book of their choice. Additional submissions, including those from readers who cannot attend the event, may be featured on our Guest Contributors section.

SPECIAL SPOTS RESERVED FOR WRITERS UNDER 30

We are interested in creating a dialogue between activists of many different ages and experiences. Since our last community event focused on older lesbians, for this upcoming event, we have reserved openings for writers under 30. The selected writers in this category will be offered signed copies of The Judy Grahn Reader and A Simple Revolution as well as the opportunity to read alongside Judy and participate in the roundtable. Writers who we are not able to feature at the event may have their pieces posted on our website.

Deadline for Submissions: March 15th, 2012

Submissions for this event should be pieces about lived experience that address how the struggle in the Bay Area today differs from or relates to the struggle in the ‘60s and ‘70s. You may read seven featured submissions from our October 13th event on the Guest Contributors section of our website. Four writers were selected to read onstage with Judy Grahn; the previous event’s focus was the formation of the lesbian community in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s and 1970s.
