Gaga Stigmata invites submissions of critical and creative pieces that explore the figure Jo Calderone in the context of Lady Gaga. Jo Calderone, a SHOWstudio model and rumored (some say confirmed) male alter ego of Lady Gaga, first made headlines in June 2010 as images of him surfaced on the Internet. We invite projects that analyze the meaning, signification, aesthetic, and/or place of Jo Calderone in the scope of Lady Gaga’s art.
To be considered: theories and aesthetics of drag and cross-dressing; masculinity; the body and identity, the fluid body; the doubled self, ego and alter ego; the history of the alter ego in pop music; Gaga’s redefinition or refiguring of the alter ego; the relationship between Jo Calderone and “Alejandro”; the narrative of Jo Calderone; performativity; performance art; the symbolism/power of the name “Jo Calderone.”
All critical submissions should exhibit a familiarity with the existing literature on Jo Calderone (interviews, articles, etc), should provide an original take on the subject, and should follow the general submission guidelines found here. All creative pieces should be accompanied by an artistic statement, and should also adhere to the submission guidelines for creative works.
Deadline for submissions: October 5, 2010. Send all pieces to gagajournal@gmail.com. All submissions will be considered for publication on our online journal – http://gagajournal.blogspot - and in our upcoming book project.
